First Malay President's Scholar in 44 years
SINGAPORE - Mr Adil Hakeem Mohamad Rafee, 19, is the second Malay to be awarded the President's Scholarship after 44 years.
The first was Mr Ismail Ibrahim who received the award in 1968.
Mr Adil Hakeem was also a Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) top scorer in 2005, when he scored 282 in the exam.
Before that he was studying in Guanyang Primary School, but transferred over to Rosyth when he was accepted into the Ministry of Education's gifted programme.
Last year, he did the Republic proud as part of the national team that emerged as champions in the World Schools Debating Championships in Scotland.
However, his journey to academic success was not always smooth.
He admitted to The Straits Times that he had scored an E in his preliminary exams in A-level Chemistry last year. However, a few months of intense study helped to correct it into an A, and he scored distinctions in all seven subjects.
The former Raffles Institution student also paid tribute to his grandmother for his success. He told The Straits Times that if not for her he would have never studied as hard as he has.
With both his parents at work, he and his younger brother were often left at home alone, and his grandmother would nag both of them into finishing their homework.
Speaking to the paper, he said, "My success has now put pressure on my brother - my grandmother keeps telling him to study harder for his exams."
His younger brother, Arif Izzudddin, 16, is a Secondary 4 student at Chung Cheng High School.

Terima kasih! :3
